What is a niche?
A topic is the subject matter description of whatever the website or product is all about. A niche is a group of people who are looking for help or information on a topic. Your audience.
How to find a niche to blog about?
How do I find the best niche idea for me? People say find something you are passionate about or now a lot about… The mind goes blank. Sound familiar?
What about something you want to know a lot about and are willing to research your butt off to find out how it works?
aha! I have found my niche. I want to learn to blog and make money online.
Saving Money, Camping, Internet Marketing, Travelling Australia, Website building, Goals, and having Fun are all hobbies of mine and whilst I may dabble in these, a website needs more focus.
I decided that my blogging journey would be my main topic area and my audience would be people that I can help to build their own blog and online business from anywhere. Some people, like me, have jobs that mean that they have to relocate often.
My niche, or audience, is people who are looking for ways to build a blog to make money online whilst traveling and having fun or working from home or any other environment.
I may have a laptop lifestyle, but I don’t want to go to third world countries and backpack. I want to travel around Australia camping out whenever I can and holiday overseas.
Find your niche topic and audience
In order to be more successful, you do need to try and narrow down your niche so that your website becomes authoritative in one area.
Having a narrow niche makes it easier for the search engines to categorize what your website is about, and work out the overall topic, and the people they should recommend your website too.
It helps to determine the way that you can relate to your audience and from what angle. Should your blog be a personal one, a business one or be dedicated to a particular age group?
What is your audience’s problem?
Why is understanding this question important?
Understanding your audience’ problem will help you create a blog or website that can help them. Knowing what words they are using to search for this information is how you can title your pages to make your website become more visible to them.
My blog post What is a Keyword will help you to find these words.
A niche can be any topic at all. It is really a matter of trying to identify what you can confidently write about constantly.
Finding your niche angle
Finding your niche angle is trying to discover the demographics of your audience. Are they young, old, complete beginners or do they have some knowledge of your topic? Is your audience looking to solve lots of problems or looking for a course of action to achieve a certain result? Are they rich, poor or somewhere in-between?
Your audience may be a combination of demographics and you can write information that is helpful with each segment in mind. This is where keyword research, as above, can offer variations and you can appear to the different demographics.
A beginners guide to… How to improve your…
These type of titles can target different skill levels and the information within each post can be written for a different angle.
Market research is important if you want to monetize your site.
You need to determine if there are products to solve the problems your audience will have. If people want to know how to tie shoelaces unless there is a book or product to help them it is difficult to monetize your blog.
You will need traffic
Can you generate traffic from people interested in your topic? Are there Facebook grounds, Twitter and Instagram hashtags, Pinterest boards, YouTube channels, forums, magazines, books and websites on the topic?
You will need to be able to research as well as create your own products or ideas and you need to be able to find out where your audience hangs out.
My Niche is About Me – my point of view
I chose the website domain My Way. I am building a blog my way, traveling and having fun while sharing from my point of view.
I hope that as I add further blog posts I will be able to solve problems that some people have with respect to building a blog on a limited budget.
As I mentioned in my very first blog post, I have many notes that I have made on a lot of topics including things like gardening, household cleaning, camping, saving money and business.
I feel that having been in business for nearly 30 years, I can share my blog creating from a business as well as a personal point of view.
I trust that as I become ‘known’ across the internet I will be able to expand on each topic and write more detail on each. I aim to then have some of my own books, reports or even videos on each niche topics.
I do have a lot of knowledge tucked away between my ears somewhere and often advise people what to do and how to fix issues.
I know what it is like not to have the funds to buy every course and product that is offered to me. I hope that by sharing my knowledge and research results, others will be able to start a blog or an online business on a low budget.
Through the businesses that I have run, I have sold a wide range of products and I am certain that I will be able to offer readers plenty of information that is relevant today and can help people to live a life that is free of the 9-5 grind. Been there, done that.
What is your niche?
You may be considering starting a blog or website or even a social media following.
Have you thought about a subject matter to discuss?
This could be specific, or like me, it could be a little more general in nature. I could not think of anything worse than trying to find ten different ways to write about the same topic.
I hope you can get some ideas from this blog post and it will help you to decide on a theme that suits you and you are comfortable writing about.
Remember to Have Fun
I want to enjoy every day and spend time having fun. Fun to me includes spending time online. Life flies by so quickly and I am looking ahead and thinking “how can I work less, enjoy life more and live simply, without stress”.
Creating a blog and online business is the way forward for me.
This is what I am all about. I want to continue to travel across Australia, sharing my lifestyle with you. What about you? Can you find a way to work less, enjoy life more and live a simpler stress-free lifestyle?
